My DIY Cushion Foundation
I hate thick heavy foundation. Now, I realize it can make you look flawless, but I would rather have slight imperfections visable than a mask of foundation. So, I became intrigued by the popularity of cushion foundations over the past year, but I couldn't bring myself to buy one. They're expensive, it comes with less product, so it felt like a rip off. But then I found a video from beauty guru Gothamista on how to make your own cushion foundation. I loved the idea of taking products I already have, mixing them all up, and wallah! I would have the perfect customized foundation.
My first attempt included four items: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (Nude), Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30, Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base (Opal), and Cover FX Custom Cover Drops (N30). I squirted out what I thought would be the right amount (measuring is for weenies), mixed them up together, and tested it on my face. I adjusted for coverage and had a great, new, fast and easy everyday foundation. It had a dewey medium coverage cushion foundation - already premixed! - that was easy and portable which is perfect for the spring and summer months. It looked good for about six hours and then started wearing off in places. Adding some setting powder fixed that, so I could make it last an entire day. Sure, I could have touched up with the cushion foundation during the day, but I just can't be bothered with that.
A few months later, it was time to refill it, so I tried a few different products: Estée Lauder Enlighten EE, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector (Opal), Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30, The Ordinary Serum Foundation, and Cover FX Custom Cover Drops. It worked like a charm, lasted all day, was dewy with medium coverage, and it is my preferred concoction for spring and summer.
So, bottom line: if you are a face product hoarder and like mixing your favorite products together to create your perfect foundation, and like saving time, a DIY cushion foundation is the answer for you.
